Trump has said he thinks "we're going to have it." Eighty-five percent of Greenlanders have said they oppose becoming part of the United States. Denmark has said Greenland is not for sale, backed by multiple NATO allies. Those three positions have been stated publicly, repeatedly, and without meaningful movement toward reconciliation. The resolution criteria is the analytical anchor. Base expansions, mineral concessions, security compacts, and tighter Arctic arrangements — all the things that could plausibly happen in this window — explicitly don't qualify. Sovereignty change recognized by Denmark and major international bodies is what resolves this YES. That's a legal and political threshold that no current negotiating track is approaching. The path to sovereignty transfer runs through either a negotiated purchase Denmark agrees to, a Greenlandic independence referendum followed by a vote to join the U.S., or forced annexation that the international community recognizes. The first requires Denmark reversing a position it has stated clearly and with allied backing. The second requires a democratic process that takes years and would currently fail by large margins given polling. The third would trigger a NATO Article 5 crisis that the White House has publicly backed away from even as rhetoric has escalated. Trump's rhetoric on Greenland has been consistent and genuinely held — this isn't purely performative. What his statements haven't produced is a mechanism. Wanting something and having a viable legal and political path to acquiring it before a specific date are different things, and the mechanism simply doesn't exist within the 2027 window under any realistic scenario. Bottom line: This is a sovereignty contract in a world where sovereignty norms, allied opposition, and local democratic sentiment all point the same direction. Watch for any formal Danish or Greenlandic negotiating engagement — not Trump statements, but Danish government responses — as the only signal that would indicate the gap between rhetoric and mechanism is closing.
